maybe i’m a goddamn bleeding heart hippie liberal but i’m totally down with paying an extra .50 cents for a thing of fries if the person who makes me those fries doesn’t have to work 3 jobs just to survive.
So, as promised, I reached 100 followers, and here is the giveaway. I’m a lazy bum, so instead of giving you guys actual things, I decided to just get gift cards, because I’ve been too busy. Since my blog is predominantly backstage theatre and Stage Management stuff, all gift cards will be for…
“Requiring Michigan women to plan ahead for an unplanned pregnancy is not only illogical, it’s one of the most misogynistic proposals I have ever seen in the Michigan Legislature.”—
Michigan Democratic Leader, Gretchen Whitmer. The board of medicine just approved a Right to Life of Michigan petition banning abortion insurance coverage. If approved by the Republican majority legislature (and not allowed to go to the voters), it would require patients to purchase an additional rider to cover abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.
Nearly half of the pregnancies in the United States are unintended, and about 40% of those are terminated. The cost of a first trimester abortion ranges anywhere from $300 to $950. Nearly 60% of women who experience a delay in accessing safe, legal abortion have cited the time it took to raise the money and make arrangements. Those delays increase the cost of abortion, as well as the risk of complications.
This is so incredibly scummy. Do you know who, because of financial burdens, will be least likely to be able to budget in extra money for additional rider abortion coverage plans? People near or below the poverty line. Do you know who, because of institutionalized racism and capitalism, are more likely to fall under that category? People of color. And because of those very same systems of oppression, do you who often have less access to contraceptives and are therefore more likely to seek an abortion in the first place? Poor women and/or people of color. Make no mistake, this legislation will (and IS MEANT TO) financially burden any person who can become pregnant who might consider abortion and if it becomes law, will likely become an obstacle that stops plenty of them from being able to choose abortion at all. Misogyny, racism, and classism all bundled together in a neat little package with a Right to Life ribbon on top. Fuck.
